Types of our Christmas Tree Transplants

BALSAM FIR: MOUNTIAN STRAIN, ASACK & SON SEED SOURCE

Balsam Fir mountain strain comes from high elevation mountains in vermont. Our seed trees are second generation trees. Transplants offered for sale are the third generation, and we consider them to be a superior strain of balsam fir. Trees are cold hardy, transplant easily, possess excellent needle retention and are the most self shaping of all our seed sources.

BALSAM FIR: COOKS STRAIN, ASACK & SON SEED SOURCE

The Cooks Balsam Fir strain is popular among northern new england tree growers. Trees have green to bluish green foliage and are moderately to fast growing and do well in northern VT. Cooks transplants for sale are an improved strain from our own seed orchard. They are the third generation from the original seed source.

FRASER FIR: NORTH CAROLINA SEED SOURCE

Fraser Fir is often called the Cadillac of christmas trees. Originally from the high elevations of North Carolina. It grows well in northern New England. Fraser Fir breaks bud later than Balsam, and is known for its excellent needle retention. Requires well drained soil.

BALSAM FRASER HYBRIDS: ASACK & SON SEED SOURCE

Balsam x Fraser Hybrids. Seeds for these trees were collected from Fraser Fir growing in Vermont, which were open pollinated with wild Vermont balsam and were an accidental discovery. Our first and second generation Hybrid trees are the fastest growing of all our seed sources. Trees have excellent needle retention. Bud break is intermediate between Balsam and Fraser Fir.Transplants for sale are second generation Hybrids.

CANAAN FIR: WEST VIGINIA SEED SOURCE

Canaan Fir some times called West Virginia Balsam originates from the mountains of West Virginia. Medium to fast growing, this tree breaks bud later than Fraser Fir and will tolerate wetter soils than Fraser Fir. This makes Canaan Fir a good selection for wetter sites that are prone to spring frost. Seed for our Canaan Fir comes from a Ohio seed orchard.

MYSTERY FIR: (LATE BREAKING FRASER FIR) ASACK & SON SEED SOURCE

Believed to be a late breaking Fraser Fir. The parent trees break bud as late as or later than Canaan Fir, but foliage and cones most resemble Fraser Fir. The parent trees appear to be resistant to Rhizosphaera needle blight and are a good choice for areas prone to frost. Transplants are of excellent quality.
